At the peak of Napa Valley’s prowess, when land for cultivating the region’s prized Cabernet Sauvignon was scarce, many of the most seasoned and successful vintners visited a 750-acre parcel for sale. After a jarring roadless drive to the parcel, they surveyed endless rock, massive boulders too large to move jutting from thin volcanic soils that required a water source where none had been found. They saw a bad bet and walked away.
A 40-something physician with three children, not much capital, and no formal training in viticulture or winemaking, saw in this inhospitable land his dream unfurling in rows of leafy vines.
What followed is a story of grit, risk, and reinvention. With relentless work, ingenuity and the steadfast partnership of his brother Bart, Jan Krupp transformed that harsh mountainside into Stagecoach Vineyard—an estate whose fruit would help redefine Napa Valley Cabernet and Syrah. Not only did some of Napa Valley’s most famous producers source fruit from Stagecoach, including Caymus, Spottswoode, Arkenstone, Stags Leap Wine Cellars, Duckhorn and Hall, but from that improbable beginning grew Krupp Brothers Winery.
This is the journey of a man who traded the certainty of medicine for the gamble of the vine—and, in doing so, discovered the life he was meant to live.
